I, Vernon Fields, have officially got the coolest job in the world. I started interning for the Harvey Dent campaign a few weeks ago. Mom said I shouldn’t be giving my time away. She was probably right. I’m right out of law school, I’ve got $160,000 in student loans to pay off. I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to find an apartment in this city, let alone pay for it. But for now, I’m living with her. There’s a Brooks Brothers outlet across the bridge in Bludhaven. And I always wanted to get involved in a political campaign.
There are plenty of volunteers, but I guess not that many who are lawyers.
Wait, Vernon, go back and read what you just typed. Yeah, lawyers. I really am a lawyer now. It still feels funny saying that.
Anyway, yesterday Richard Daniel came over as soon as I started opening folders for the new press kits. I’ve never been clear on who he was. I’d seen him around and guessed he was a bigshot in the campaign. Turns out, he’s not with the campaign at all. He’s on loan from the Wayne Foundation. I stuck my foot in my mouth real good at that point. Said something like, “Oh, so you’re not getting paid either?”
He very nicely explained that yes, he is. He’s on the Foundation payroll. They’re overseeing donations Dent’s fundraising is making to charities. Isn’t that wild? All the fundraising any political candidate has to do just to buy airtime and print up bumperstickers. Harvey Dent is giving away 20 cents on every dollar he raises. You’d think it was suicide but it sounds like it’s working really well. The Wayne Foundation has vetted the charities and is handling the actual distribution, just so there’s no charges of graft or anything. It doesn’t get any more respectable than Wayne in Gotham City, one of those families that came over with the Dutch and planted the first tree or something like that.
Anyway, after I stuck my foot in my mouth with Mr. Daniel, we chatted for a little while. Nothing about the campaign. Knights chances of making it through the playoffs, that kind of thing. Turns out, he was having dinner with Harvey himself and Gilda Lewis last night, and he mentioned me. This afternoon when I went in, Gilda was waiting and she offered me a job.
So I’m flying. I called Ma right away. We’re going out tonight to celebrate.
